"Owing to its conceptual variety, the Wohltemperiertes Klavier constitutes one of Bach's most complete opuses. It equally comprises the world of the chorales and passions, the Baroque dance movements and concertos.

The edition has been based on the 5th volume of the facsimile series (Bach works) published by the Deutscher Verlag für Musik, Leipzig in 1971. In shaping the text of the publication we also studied the major Urtext editions in general use today. The text variants of an Urtext validity which by and large equal the main text, are given in ossia. The editor's addenda are put in square brackets, or in the case of ligatures, are marked with broken lines." (István Lantos)

EMB Urtext Series
The volumes of this series go back to the contemporary sources and attempt to come as near as possible to the composers' original intentions, stripping the works of the frequently arbitrary editorial markings which they became burdened with over the course of several decades. The necessary emendations and information on techniques are distinguished unambiguously from the original music text. The use of urtext editions appear as basic requirements on the part of music teachers and performers alike.
