Johnny Depp plays the part of an old-print expert, who is commissioned by a mysterious and rich client to discover all the extant copies of an invaluable medieval book on magic powers. Roman Polański is the effective director and Wojciech Kilar the composer of the film's fantastic music. The minor-major vocalise (sung by Sumi Yo in the film) enhances the peculiar character of the picture.
