Johann Praetorius was born in Hamburg on 25 November 1595 and studied - like his brother Jakob - with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (from 1609-1610). He was organist at the church of St Nikolai in Hamburg from 1611-1660. This edition also contains three variations on ''Mein junges Leben hat ein End'' (My young life has an end), hitherto ascribed to J.P. Sweelinck.
