Speak Softly was originally composed in 2003 for Jessica Fogel's site-specific dance triptych Red Trail to Open Field. The concert version was completed the following August in Aspen, Colorado. The title refers to President Theodore Roosevelt's foreign policy catchphrase, ''Speak softly and carry a big stick.''
