The Romance lyrique is one of Kodály's earliest surviving compositions, a typical product of his student years, reflecting the composer's ideals and musical knowledge at that time. The original manuscript, preserved in the Kodály Archives in Budapest and dated 8th August 1898, is the only known source on which this edition is based.
