Setting an anonymous 15th-century text, Ades's The Fayrfax Carol was commissioned by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge for the 1997 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Subtle and lyrical yet with pointed, bitter-sweet harmonies, the piece looks ahead to Christ's Passion. A challenging, yet immensely rewarding work.
