This volume contains every completed work Bartók composed for unaccompanied chorus or chorus with piano accompaniment, except for the exercises from his student years. Between 1903 and 1935 Bartók wrote nine choral works, consisting of altogether 56 mostly short movements. He considered seven of them to be mature works and had them published. „Est” [Evening] (1903), which Bartók submitted unsuccessfully in a competition, is representative of his early style and remained unpublished during his lifetime; the splendid miniatures of Two Romanian Folk Songs (1909?) were left behind as an unedited draft. Bartók’s most significant contribution to universal chorus literature is represented by the 30 movements for children’s, women’s, and men’s voices, using folk texts edited by the composer himself, composed in 1935. In the main part of the volume, the last authentic versions of the works published in the composer’s lifetime and those that remained unpublished but were intended for the public are presented. In addition to the original words of the compositions, the edition includes all the translations approved by Bartók. Two Romanian Folk Songs, the early version of Four Hungarian Folk Songs (1910), the early, German-texted version of part 2 of Székely Folk Songs (1932), and the English-language versions of ten pieces from Twenty-Seven Choruses (1935) are included in Appendix I. Appendix II features the original words of each work along with a literal English translation.
