Ferenc Farkas (1905-2000) was one of Hungary's most decisive 20th-century composers. Hungarian folk music, classical traditions, Mediterranean melodiousness and twelve-step technique were combined in his huge oeuvre, which includes more than 800 works.

He was 27 years old when he composed the Sonata for solo cello. The three-movement structure of the work (slow-fast-slow) follows classical traditions, but the influence of Hungarian folk songs can also be recognized in the motifs and themes of the movements. Despite its indisputable beauty, melodic richness and naturalness adapted to the possibilities of the instrument, the Sonata remained in manuscript. It was published more than eight decades later at the initiative of the renowned cellist Miklós Perényi, with his editorial assistance in 2014.
