En 1874 fut organisee en hommage au dessinateur et architecte disparu Viktor A. Hartmann (1834-1873) une exposition de ses aquarelles et de ses dessins dont la visite inspira a son ami Modest Moussorgski le cycle des ''Tableaux d'une exposition''. Cette oeuvre pour piano constitue une etape marquante du repertoire de cet instrument. Composee en juin 1874 a Saint-Petersbourg, elle est sous-titree ''Souvenirs de Viktor Hartmann''. Illustratif et evocateur, son langage sonore donne veritablement vie aux tableaux et continue jusqu'a aujourd'hui de fasciner. L'edition Henle repose sur le manuscrit autographe redige tres proprement. La partition est structuree conformement a celle de Moussorgski.
