In 2013 Michel von der Aa received the Grawemeyer Award, one of the most prestigious international composition awards, for his cello concerto 'Up-Close'. This much-noticed work was written for the Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta and the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. It reflects interactions between the soloist and the ensemble and opens up questions on the contemporary examination of music and film, man and machine.
