The lute, an instrumental relative of the guitar, has a rich and valuable chamber literature, particularly from the Renaissance period. Apart from the dance music fashionable at the time, transcriptions of vocal pieces for the keyboard were also popular. (Often the composer himself transcribed his own madrigals as songs with lute accompaniment or as solo lute pieces.) In this volume compiled by the well-known guitar and chamber music teacher Erzsébet Nagy, part of the material consists of transcriptions for two guitars of Renaissance madrigals and songs with lute accompaniment, the remaining pieces represent the dance music of the period in simplified form, the selection also includes two original lute duets by John Dowland.
