Among the most brilliant of Nicolo Paganini’s numbers for solo violin, the Variations on „God save the King” (M.S. 56) are outstanding in their musical refinement and their bold virtuosity. Composed in 1829, the piece opens with the tune of the famous anthem already varied, followed by six variations. Conceived with the intention of „convincing the incredulous”, as Paganini himself wrote to his friend Luigi Guglielmo Germi, it constitutes a veritable compendium of the highest school of violin playing in which may be found all the technical artifices invented by the celebrated violinist of Genoa.
