Schumann’s albums have become defining works of his era. The 13 miniatures included in Scenes of Childhood bear poetic titles, which ╩ although, according to the composer, intended primarily as performance instructions ╩ serve as a thematic links, weaving the pieces into a fairytale-like garland. The series, inspired by childhood memories, can be performed by intermediate pianists, but the expressive performance of the cycle provides a worthy mission for musically mature performers also.
