According to the evidence of the manuscript the work was written in Potsdam where Philipp Emanuel Bach was court musician of the Prussian king Frederick the Great. The composition date is 1748, i.e. one year after the memorable visit of his father, Johann Sebastian Bach. The sources of the present edition are: the critical edition published in volumes 29-30 of the Denkmäler deutscher Tonkunst in 1906 as well as the autograph manuscript kept in Berlin that served as a basis of the former.
