En 1849, Schumann publia 6 impromptus pour piano a quatre mains sous le titre de ''Bilder aus Osten''. Comme il ressort de l'avant-propos de la premiere edition, Schumann s'est inspire des Makamas - un genre de prose rimee en arabe - du poete du Moyen-age Hariri, traduits en allemand par Friedrich Rückert. Abu Said, le personnage principal de ces Makamas, que Schumann comparait avec le Till Eulenspiegel allemand ne le quitta pas durant toute la composition, ce qui explique le caractere ''exotique'' des pieces. Plus de 150 ans apres leur parution, les ''Images d'Orient'', qui recourent de maniere tres subtile a la large palette de sonorites du piano a quatre mains, n'ont rien perdu de leur charme.
