Le surnom de ce dernier concerto que Saint-SaŰns composa pour son instrument de predilection, possede une double signification. D'une part ce concerto fut compose dans une febrile precipitation au printemps 1896 en egypte, a Luxor et au Caire. D'autre part le compositeur utilisa des elements de la musique egypto-orientale. Il ecrivit meme plus tard: ''La seconde partie est une fašon de voyage en Orient qui va meme, dans l'episode en fa diese, jusqu'en Extreme-Orient. Le passage en sol est un chant d'amour nubien que j'ai entendu chanter par les bateliers sur le Nil.''
