L'une des principales et des plus belles oeuvres pour piano de Mendelssohn a ete soumise a la critique des sources par Ullrich Scheideler et nouvellement editee ici, accompagnee d'une annexe de commentaires detailles. Dans la premiere version de 1828, ce morceau de bravoure petillant est encore designe comme ''Etude''. Deux ans plus tard, le compositeur decide de remettre l'oeuvre a la jeune pianiste virtuose Delphine von Schauroth, qu'il courtise alors. Il remanie l'oeuvre pour elle sous le nouveau titre de ''Rondo capriccioso'', la rendant nettement plus brillante, et il ajoute - comme il l'ecrit dans une lettre a Fanny - un ''emouvant adagio introductif''. Sous cette forme, l'oeuvre offre aujourd'hui encore a tous les pianistes avances un terrain gratifiant et plein d'attrait.?
