Le compositeur abandonna plus tard ce projet mais realisa neanmoins la puissante composition de sa ''Fantasie''. En mars 1838, il ecrit a sa fiancee Clara Wieck: ''Le premier mouvement est probablement ce que j'ai fait de plus passionne''. L'oeuvre represente ainsi un sommet dans les compositions pour piano de Schumann, alliant de fašon inegalable passion, emotion et virtuosite.
