En 1818 et 1819, Schubert se concentra particulierement sur la forme de la sonate. En guise de synthese, si l'on peut dire, il composa cette sonate en La majeur, vraisemblablement au cours de l'ete 1819, c'est-a-dire a peu pres au meme moment que le quintette ''La Truite''. La sonate degage d'ailleurs le meme caractere gai et printanier que ce dernier. Il s'agit de l'une des grandes sonates de Schubert dont les exigences techniques sont egalement accessibles aux pianistes non professionnels.
