It was in 1898, while he was at secondary school in Nagyszombat, that Kodály wrote his strophic Stabat Mater for a capella male choir, which he reworked in 1962. The text of the present edition prec isely follows Kodály's 1962 notation. The version for mixed choir (arranged by Imre Sulyok) matches it exactly: the soprano part corresponds to that of the first tenor, the bass part matches the original second bass, and the harmonies are also the same, so that the two versions can even be sung together. First printed edition.
