József Bloch (1862-1922) was an outstanding figure in violin pedagogy in Hungary. With his violin method entitled A hegedűjáték és tanítási módszere (Violin Playing and How to Teach it) he provided sound theoretical knowledge for future teachers. In addition, his books of scales, violin tutors, and finger exercises contributed to the success of teaching in practice. Bloch placed great emphasis on laying a foundation for instrumental technique and raising it to an artistic level. The collection Kettősfogások iskolája (Double-Stop Method) comes in two volumes, and contains simple exercises at the beginning, followed at the end of volume 1 and in volume 2 by guidance for overcoming more complex technical difficulties. In these exercises, an important role is given to developing the sense of intonation in the left hand. At the end of volume 2, in an extensive appendix, Bloch initiates violin pupils into the theory of intonation.
