The first volume of the present horn tutor is divided into forty parts. Each part consists of an overtone exercise, a cantilena and a certain number of children's songs, folk songs and pieces of art music which help the student solve specific musical, technical and rhythmic tasks. The daily work should also include practicing sustained notes and scales, overtones and cantilenas.

When compiling this tutor our primary aim was to offer manifold material. Thus more exercises are pre-sented here than what is prescribed in the curriculum, so that students starting earlier than the average (at the age of 8 or 9) should also have enough material. The selection is the responsibility of the teacher.

An accurate horn playing demands that the appropriate functions be established and strengthened. Since techniques pertaining to horn playing are likely to deform, the functional exercises should be practised every day.

The idea of this tutor first came to Zoltán Lubik, professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Budapest, who was prevented from elaborating more than some of the themes only by his early death. Of his work we have taken over the overtone exercises and the cantilenas. By the present volume we pay tribute to his memory.
