A composer and conductor of genius, Eugene Bozza (1905-1991) left us several operas, ballets, large-scale symphonic and choral works, but his worldwide reputation is derived mainly from his many chamber works, written for various instrumental formations with a preference for wind instruments. Conceived in the spirit of the French Conservatoire tradition, Agrestide (1942) is a single-movement piece which unfolds in three contrasting sections: an impressionistic „Modéré” and free-flowing „Cadence”, a lyrical „Andantino” reminiscent of a romantic cantilena, and a dazzling finale that pushes virtuosity to its peak. This piece reveals the composer’s distinctive blend of pastoral color, subtle Orientalist influences, and brilliant instrumental writing, shaping a vivid musical landscape that is both evocative and technically demanding.
