Dance Song (Táncdal) was composed in 1952 during György Kurtág's student years. It is one of the few early works the composer still regards as part of his oeuvre. The piece originates from an earlier composition: the first movement (Vivace) of the Suite for piano four hands written a year earlier. The text by Sándor Weöres was inspired by the piano piece's fresh, dance-like character and by its rhythm and melody reminiscent of Hungarian folk children's songs.
