''The idea for Technical and Reading Exercises was inspired by Carl Wehner's excellent work, 12 große Übungen. During my own studies, I experienced how the difficulties of reading and slurring in Wehner's exercises can present a considerable challenge. I believe the main problem is that the study of Wehner's exercises is not preceded by a series of studies conceived along similar lines and with similar aims, which would prepare students for these difficulties through their gradual and systematic introduction. It is this purpose that I hope my work will serve. Through the gradual expansion of intervals, patterns, and range, combined with increasing reading challenges, students can begin tackling difficulties of reading and slurring as early as their second year of study. The two volumes contain material for four years of study, with the final three or four exercises already approaching the level of technical demand found in Wehner's exercises.''
