Many compositions by Wolfgang-Andreas Schultz are graphic ''descriptions'' of well-known or lesser known works of fine arts. In his wind quintet Capriccio notturno of 1984 he appears as narrator, yet in music only, without any words. Each instrument has its own motifs - except for the bassoon which only parodies the others. If one imagines the flute as princess, the oboe as prince, the clarinet as schemer, the horn as lover and the bassoon as goblin, says Schultz, a romantic, ghostly tale of love and betrayal in a summer's night ensues.
