Dog Days reflect the composer's discomfort with the high humidity and high tempertures often encountered in July and August, air so heavy and heat so oppressive that one can barely move. The composition reflects this climate in a slow, harmonically static language interrupted by whispered commentaries by the choir. The Trois Gymnopedies of Eric Satie served as a musical model.
