The editors selected the material in the volume from the music of 600 years, choosing primarily pedagogical works from over 60 composers. The pieces are arranged in order of difficulty, and the easier ones can be played in the first year of study. This succession of etudes and extracts in various characters, employing a range of keys, metres, and tempos, always focuses on different challenges.
