At the same time, his compositions primarily sought to please the leading musical circles of Germany, walking a fine line between the expectations of the conservatives and the musicians of the future, respectively. This volume describes Volkmanns highly successful musical career in his double context, devoting special attention to his 19th-century reception, as well as to the features of his style that his contemporaries perceived as exotic. Besides, the appendix provides a first account of numerous manuscripts belonging to the composers estate in Dresden.
