The composer György Kósa (1897-1984) bequeathed a rich oeuvre to posterity: nine operas, eleven ballets, nearly fifty cantatas and oratorios, nine symphonies, many other orchestral and chamber works, instrumental pieces, and about two hundred songs. Behind all this lay the man himself - rich in experiences and successes, and responsive to his times, the outside world, and to related arts. The critics showed interest in his work from the mid-1920s onwards. His reception in musical circles was not invariably positive, but his personal charm and the enigmatic atmosphere and elusive effect of his music nevertheless won him special respect as a composer who consistently followed his own path.
