Dmitriy Danilov graduated from the N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Saint-Petersburg Conservatory in 2004, where he majored in choral conducting. He is a versatile and talented musician, who successfully conducts two amateur choirs, performs as a pianist, and plays romances (including his own musical compositions).
D. Danilov has been composing since early childhood. However, his first noteworthy compositions were written during his student years. In many respects, this creative period came about thanks to Dmitriy’s enthusiasm for the Silver Age of Russian poetry. Romances appeared first, followed by choral music.
Today D. Danilov’s major works consist of the following: ''Twilight Poem'', based on A. Block’s poems and composed for choir, soloists, violin and piano (2004), composition for five a cappella choirs, based on A. Vertinskiy’s poems (2006), ''Divine Liturgy'' for an a cappella choir (2010), choral compositions, based on poems by L. Mey, I. Severyanin and N. Gumilyov, choir arra ngements of Russian and Gypsy folk songs, romances, based on the poems by A. Block, I. Bunin, I. Severyanin, K. Balmont, N. Gumilyov and V. Sorokin, and several piano compositions.
He caught his first big success, when he received 3rd prize at the International Composers’ Competition ''Romanos the Melodist'', which took place in Saint-Petersburg (spring 2012). He was nominated in the category of ''Large-scale musical composition on a sacred subject for the choir'' for his ''Divine Liturgy''. This composition was performed by the choir of the Mikhaylovsky Theatre, conducted by V. Stolpovskih (as a part of the Great Lenten concerts), which took place in the Large Hall of the Saint-Petersburg Philharmonia.
D. Danilov’s first collection of choir music contains five pieces taken from his ''Twilight Poem'', composed for an a cappella choir and Two a cappella choirs, based on N. Gumilyov’s verses.
