Edvard Grieg wrote pieces for piano throughout his life. These pieces (there are over three hundred of them) may be compared to lyric poems.
The collection contains two volumes of Grieg's Lyric Pieces for piano (op. 47 and 54), which are widely used both in the teaching class and the concert hall. It is precisely in these pieces, to quote B.V. Asafiev, that ''Grieg intensifies intimate music-making ''by the fireside'' and creates a sense of the sublime, not with any high-flown passions but with a quiet rapture with the beauty of reality: the reality of nature and of the human heart.''
