The collected works of Alfred Schnittke are a joint project of the publishing house Composer St. Petersburg and the Ivashkin Archive - Schnittke at Goldsmiths College, University of London. The texts of the compositions are verified with autographs and previous editions and edited by leading performers of music by Schnittke.

The first violin sonata by Alfred Schnittke was written at the request of Mark Lubotsky in 1963. The premiere took place in the concert hall of the Gnesins State Music and Pedagogical Institute (now the Gnesins Russian Academy of Music) on April 28, 1964 performed by Mark Lubotsky (violin) and author (piano). In May 1969, the sonata was printed on a glass scanner by the Muzfond Production Plant in the amount of forty copies. Later that year, it was released by the Music pub lishing house in Moscow, and in 1972 by the Peters publishing house in Leipzig.
