Russia Cast Adrift is one of the most significant works of Georgy Sviridov’s mature period. Originally composed for tenor with piano accompaniment, Sviridov made a subsequent version for mezzo-soprano which he performed and recorded with Elena Obraztsova. Mikhail Arkadiev later made an arrangement for baritone especially for Dmitri Hvorostovsky, which the duo performed around the world during the 1990s. It is thanks to Hvorostovsky that Russia Cast Adrift became known outside Russia. It is now one of Sviridov’s most popular vocal works worldwide, with performances both in Russia and abroad. There are numerous transcriptions of the work including versions for voice and symphony orchestra, voice and folk-instrument ensemble, for children’s choir and folk-instrument ensemble, and for female-voice choir with piano accompaniment. Sviridov himself planned to make a transcription for voice and symphony orchestra. The current edition reproduces the composer’s version for mezzo-soprano and pian o, it is intended for performers, teachers, and students of vocal music, and a wide range of music lovers alike.
