Tchaikovsky started working on the cycle ''Twelve Pieces of Moderate Difficulty'' in February 1878 during his stay in Florence. It includes pieces of traditional genres of home music-making (waltz, mazurka, etude, scherzo) and the romantic genre of songs without words. Opus is dedicated to Modest Ilyich, Tchaikovsky’s brother, who supported the composer and shared with him all the hardships of this time.
