Richard Strauss (1864-1949) - the German composer, conductor, musical and public figure, Being the younger contemporary of Gustav Mahler, Strauss managed to live ? long, fruitful life. Strauss occ urred to be the author of fifteen operas, two symphonies, two ballets, orchestral suites, instrumental concertos, great ?????? of songs and romances, chamber compositions, choruses, music to drama plays. The eight symphonic poems by Strauss are truly considered to be the most significant part of his heritage. This genre was elaborated by the composer especially during the end of 1880ies and the whole 1890ies.
The symphonic ???m ''Jolly Tricks of Till Eulenspiegel'' was conceived by Richard Strauss duriug 1894-1895. The subject itself was primarily intended by Strauss as the opera one. The glaring comical character makes the ???? be the novelty in the history of this genre's existence.
The author provided the ???? with the sub-title: ''Based on the early bu ffoonery ditties ? rondo form for full symphony orchestra''. Thus it's worth to mention, that Strauss was inspired by the old German legends dating the l?th century about the buffoon, rogue, mischievous lad, playing tricks of priests, lawyers, sellers and others, that leads him to gallows. Meanwhile the famous novel by Charles d? Coster did not influence the poem’s creative process anyhow.
