The four symphonies by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) belong to the highest achievements of the world classical music. All of them were composed during the period of maturity in Brahms' creative work. When being fourty-three years old the composer completed his First symphony, meanwhile such masterpieces as the German Requiem and the First piano concerto already existed then.
The Second symphony D-major, ??. 73 was composed one year later after the First symphony completion. It was in 1877, when Brahms stayed at the village Portschach on the bank of Werter Lake. The premiere was held on December 30, 1877 in Vienna, conducted by Hans Richter. The publication dates 1878.
