Written for the Nash Ensemble in 1987, Tendril is a 14-minute chamber work for eleven musicians comprising up of piano, horn, single woodwinds and solo strings. Its title hints at the intertwining melodic lines that unspool across the piece, which frequently returns to evocative incantations that dissolve into various sound effects: scratches, taps, and whistles.
