Known from the visual arts, the phenomenon of anamorphosis is an important inspiration and symbol of my musical thinking. How to put known musical turns and interactions (from the past) into a medium that can only be recognized from a special point of view, or otherwise appear to us as carriers of new musical and sound relations. I seek the musical analogy of the visual phenomenon from multiple angles, always faced with the productive difference: my material is temporal. While in visuality the immobile anamorphic figure can be viewed one after the other from different perspectives, in music, time itself becomes the subject of anamorphosis.In 2016, for the first time, I used consciously musical anamorphoses in a vocal piece, but the technique, and even more so the spirit associated with it, has since determined many of my compositions.The loosely connected four movements of New Anamorphoses conceal and reveal, at one and the same time, such „representations” of musical memory. 1. Fantasia upon an Other Note: Purcell’s famous piece from the perspective of another part.2. Mass of Tourn(y)ai: An anonymous mass movement from the 14. century meets the relativity of time.3. Kaiser’s Crossword Puzzle: The emergence of a series of harmonies by Haydn as a lucky constellation of independent parts.4. Anamorphose des couleurs: Reflections of pure harmonies.There are many aspects that link this composition, sometimes consciously and sometimes not, to the art of my master, Zoltán Jeney: so I planned to dedicate this piece to him. Within hours of pulling the double line at the end of the fourth movement, I was among the firsts to hear of his death. Then a short epilogue came to the end of the piece.The work was commissioned by the Péter Eötvös Foundation and supported by the Kunststiftung Nordrhein-Westfalen. (Péter Tornyai)
