One of Mathias's earliest pieces (written whilst he was still a student at the Royal Academy of Music in 1956), the Sonatina for clarinet and piano still displays many of the composer's inimitable fingerprints: the syncopatedself-propelling rhythms, eloquent lyricism, and life-enhancing exuberance.
