Emily Dickinson's evocative poem charts the progress of an unspecified journey, although the young poet (only 23 years old at the time of writing) almost certainly had the journey of life itself in mind. The music reflects this idea by beginning with the solo cello and gradually increasing in volume and intensity until the final measures.
