This collection (Z. 4219, Z. 4626) contains real rarities. The second volume presents a selection of piano compositions from Bartók’s youth (between 1896 and 1905) that were not published during his lifetime. The early piano compositions do not form part of the composer’s established oeuvre, but offer insight into the evolution of the young composer’s style. The collection was compiled by renowned Belgian Bartók researcher and the first director of the Bartók Archive in Budapest, Denijs Dille, based on the manuscripts found in the Bartók legacy in Hungary. Zoltán Kodály also helped to advise the compilation and publication process of this 1963 volume.
