Gyöngyösi Levente: Iudas, mercator pessimus
from Tenebr Responsoria, Feria Quinta
Choral sheet music
In the Catholic liturgy, Maundy Thursday forms part of the Easter Triduum and commemorates the Last Supper and the betrayal of Jesus Christ. Its remarkably poetic, emotionally intense, and deeply moving texts invite the faithful to experience the Passion, to enter into the perspectives of Christ, Judas, and the disciples, and to deepen their own faith.
Iudas, mercator pessimus (''Judas, the most vile merchant''), the fifth movement of the cycle, is a very fast and lively, mocking choral piece, similar to the turbae of Bach's Passions, symbolizing the energetic outbursts of anger of the people (and thus of the faithful) against the traitor's deed.
The work is recommended for professional and advanced amateur choirs.
