Written for the tercentenary of Henry Purcell's death in 1995 for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Voices of Memory is a set of variations on a theme from Maw's Life Studies No.1 lasting 25 minutes. Purcell's influence is evident in the closing passacaglia as well as the moody brass chorales, the ten variations that make up the piece unfold in dramatically contrasting episodes, with imaginative washes of orchestral colour.
